I love it when we get questions from our readers because it makes me think about things I haven’t thought about in awhile. Like this one did.
Reader Submitted Question:
What do you recommend to someone who is getting ready to start a blog on a free blog option, Blogger.com or WordPress.com?
Quick note before I answer to avoid any confusion – WordPress.com is the free user blogs from WordPress and they host the site. WordPress.org is where you download your own copy of WordPress to install on your own hosting and use your own domain name.
I think it depends on what the goal of the blogger is. If someone just wants a personal blog to play around on and possibly talk about some product reviews or a hobby they enjoy there’s no harm in starting on Blogger.com and it is definitely easier to learn if they are completely technophobic. It’s comparable to composing an email is what I often hear said when it comes to how easy Blogger.com is to use compared to WordPress.com
One thing to think about when deciding between Blogger.com and WordPress.com to consider is if you want ads and monetization. WordPress.com doesn’t allow that and they will delete you if they even suspect advertising intentions. (At least that’s how it used to be, not sure if they’ve lightened up at all since the last time I looked there or not)
If they want to have a fully monetized site out of the gate I would go with the domain name, small hosting account (total investment is less than $20 at that point and can be less than 10 per month for the hosting) and just go for it full run. You can have the hosting company install WordPress for you or hire a VA to set it up for you quickly. It might seem scary at first, but it’s worth the investment if someone wants to grow a blog and monetize it on any level.
Happy Blogging,
