Well Loretta posted a very timely post last week about “When You Have the Kind of Day That Makes You Want a J.O.B”. I’m quite sure I helped inspire her to pull those tips out as I’d talked to her on chat the night before as my business had hit a huge crisis and I was working hard at not twirling in a circle and throwing my computer.

I’m actually writing this as I work through that huge momentum stop that she talked about. Last week I was on a big roll. New clients sending me work ahead, projects getting done for these clients and just riding high. It all came crashing down in the matter or a second and believe me in that couple of hours that it took to fix I was done. No, that would be *D*O*N*E*! No turning back, no checking emails, hand my sites to whoever or let them shrivel up and pass on all joint sites to my business partners…done.

As my stomach churned and I stepped up to having to do whatever I could to rectify a broken situation of my own doing I thankfully kept calm outwardly. This was easily the worst error I’d ever made in business and I was worried about the ties and networking bond that had been created be ruined along with how sick I felt about the error happening in the first place. Poor Loretta had to get my IM’s about it. lol But I can remember back to getting IM’s (usually middle of night) when she had barely any hair left because she’d pulled it all out after client emails. ;)

As Loretta did, I’m stepping back a little. Which stinks because it’s ruined one day of work I had set aside so I could take the weekend off. BUT, I don’t want to mess up any clients work because my heads not on their project.

Some things I did to get through it:

1. I immediately looked into the situation and explored all angles no matter the cost to get the error rectified. Thankfully I did as even though I’d been told something was not an option, I found out it was! Don’t be afraid to ask even if FAQ or people have told you different. Contact support and ask.

2. I logged off social networks and didn’t answer emails. I didn’t want to vent my frustrations on FB or twitter, that’s for sure. Emails, I didn’t want to pass off any frustrations I was having to others that didn’t deserve it. Thankfully some important emails didn’t come through until after I had things fixed.

3. I got off the computer completely. In fact, I got up and worked on dinner, did dishes and laundry. I focused on the kids being awesome and doing their chores without complaint. Maybe I was smiling too hard and they could tell? lol

4. I stayed off the computer and chatted with the family after dinner and watched women’s world series. Of course, that wasn’t helpful as UW didn’t step up and lost, but that’s not the point. I only got back on the computer a couple of times and that was because hubby is SO SLOW on his phone looking up info. We’re addicted to googleing stupid info.

5. Next day was supposed to be full day of work. It wasn’t working. I put in a movie, made myself lunch and pet the dogs. I then set up the evening to hang with the family again. It meant working Sat, but giving the clients my best work is more important.

6. I spent half of Saturday with my notebook and pen. Writing down goals, making lists and generally trying to do some focus. It helped that I’d just had a mini coaching session that day. Got my brain back into business. I’m excited for The Peace System 6 week coaching program to start as it’s amazingly timely.

But the biggest thing I have to remember is that going to work for someone else would mean no flexibility and missing out on many family things along with having to drop my seniors fitness class that I love teaching so much. I haven’t worked for someone else in over 4 years. It would be a huge culture shock and I wonder just how long I would be able to work before the family was trying to get me to take some days off. lol

  1. Stepping back and putting things in different light usually does the trick. It’s never uninteresting working from home that’s for sure. Some days it’s hard to stick it out, but powering through it definitely has it’s rewards.
