Working at Home with Kids Over the Summer

Summer is in full swing and I’ve noticed a lot of folks struggling to balance summer fun with work and kids activities with business. Here we are as a good example, notice the quiet that fell on the blog here in the beginning of July as we all stepped back to go on vacation and spend time with the kiddos.
It’s a common misconception that summer will bring us more free time if we work at home, when in fact if you have kids chances are you’re going to have less free time in the summer than during the school year (unless you’re a homeschooling family, then that’s a whole different ball of wax!)
So, let’s look at some things we can do to best manage our time during the summer with the kids home, vacations coming up, barbecues to attend, and all the things that make summer what it is.
We want to hear from YOU ~ what’s your best summertime tip for managing it all while still enjoying a few rays of sunshine?
I’ll get us started off with a few…..
- Change your schedule to work more at night and less during the day. This way you’re not interrupted and you can get more done without that feeling of momguilt that you might find yourself getting during the day.
- Arrange a sleepover swap with the kiddo’s friends families. This can take some creative scheduling on your part if, like me, you have a larger family. But, never fear, it can be done.
- Check into local Day Camps that activities for your kids to do, often times there are free or low cost programs available. We did this two summers ago for my youngest two and they loved it. It was a small group, it cost me less than 100 dollars for both of them to join up for the whole summer. They went swimming twice a week, did crafts, went to the zoo, and made a bunch of new friends.
Okay…. your turn! Let’s hear it. What tips or ideas might you have for making the best of your summertime?
Kind Regards,

It’s so weird how I fool myself into thinking one or the other will be better. (Greener grass?) Like right now, I’m thinking, I can’t wait until school starts so that I can really get some work done. But in April/May, I couldn’t wait until summer started for the same reason. I was trying to convince myself yesterday (driving around {on one of my many ‘kid errands’} that it just never ends. It always is chaotic – and there always is stuff to work around. So the first step for me is just accepting that there will be no glorious, uninterrupted work time. And then figuring out how to work around that. Silly me.
