Is Your Message Positive?

Very recently a fellow WAHM was coming out with a new ecourse and I was interested to check it out. I get to the “sales page” explaining the course, what’s included, and why you should take it. All the elements of a typical sales letter were there, but there was one problem. Everything was from a negative perspective, nothing was positive.
Did I purchase what she was selling? No, I did not. Would you? Probably not. I’m not going to name names or point fingers here, so don’t bother to ask. I know that she is currently working on rewriting her description and messages in a more positive light, so the situation will be remedied soon enough. But, it made me think a little.
I looked around the internet a bit and sure enough I found plenty more pages that were very, very negative. Now, don’t misunderstand me, you want your information product to be the cure for a particular pain or problem that someone is having, so of course you have to describe that pain or problem to get your point across. That is not what I am referring to as negative here.
By negative I mean looking at everything from the negative point of view with a negative attitude. I’ve seen a lot of “negative advertising” and “negative marketing” going on a lot lately and I have to say that it doesn’t attract me as a buyer at all and it makes me want to poke you in the eye just a little bit.
A good example without linking to anyone online in particular would be those rotten political ads you see on TV all the time, making yourself look better by making someone else look bad is not the way to win me over for a vote or to buy your stuff, so knock it off and show me some real value in a positive way.
I hope you’re having a super productive Monday today and influencing the internet in a positive way!
Kind Regards,

I couldn’t agree with you more about keeping a positive message. It really is so counterproductive to start out with negativity straight out of the gate.

I agree. Everything in life can be pointed to negative, but twist it so I can move it positive for business. Why do I want to stay down in the negative? Although, if you are feeling down do you spend more on retail therapy? Is that the marketing ploy perhaps? Not a ploy for those of us that are looking to move our biz forward, but maybe something that others are capitalizing on.
I think that’s what it is, Val. They have the right idea, to find the pain or problem and point it out, but they are focusing on the negative aspects only instead of accenting the positive point that you’re going to fix the problem and then just it leads to more negativity as they write.
Right idea, wrong direction, in my opinion anyway. I’d much rather hear [read] that someone understands the problem I’m having, they know how to fix it, or have fixed it, and they are going to help me fix it too. That kind of thing motivates me to buy, peaks my interest, and makes me want to know more, more, more.

I agree. I understanding bringing attention to having a better service/product than your competitor, but some of the negativity we are seeing in advertising is a real turnoff.
I’d be quick to move along if I saw something like that. It would turn me off and turn me away. And don’t get me started on those negative campaign ads. They are awful.
