Do you click on links in Twitter? What if they’re a download?

I’m curious if anyone else has encountered this from some of the “guru” internet marketing type folks on Twitter. I’ve unfollowed quite a few of these guys on Twitter because their streams are just me, me, me all the time.
But, this is the first time I was actually angry … I wasn’t even following this person, One of the people I do follow and opinion I value ReTweeted the message. It was something I was interested in, so naturally I clicked on the link at the end of the tweet expecting to go to an article, site, page etc with more information about the topic. Instead of a new page opening up, I got an instant zip file download!
With all the crap on the internet viruses etc this isn’t exactly something I was happy with! I let the person who posted the RT know that the link was a download and they deleted it from their twitterstream. However, the IM guru didn’t really think it was a big deal…. Had the original tweet said something #download at the end of it, then I wouldn’t have cared either way because it would have been obvious. But it didn’t. This link came from someone with 25k+ followers …. I’m sure a lot of people clicked on it.
I’m sorry, I don’t think that is okay and I don’t care who did or didn’t do it. Not good twittetiquette at all! I hope Twitter can find a way to prevent these from going through in the future. It’s just asking for trouble.
What are your thoughts here? Is it okay? Would you be annoyed or angry about it?

Oh, no way!!!! I think it’s definitely not okay – at all! I would definitely have been upset had I clicked one of those. I totally agree with you!
Hi there… totally agree with you !! If anybody wants somebody else to download something, do have a downloaded page.
At least, the mass has the choice whether to download or not ; whether to opt-in or not, whether they find the product is beneficial to them or not.
Twitter is a social-networking site and relationship on Twitter has to be built – not forced to download. LOL !

A zip file isn’t going to kill your computer. If you have a virus scanner, chances are, it will scan inside an archive if you download it, and if yours doesn’t, upgrade to one that will. With that being said, use Firefox. There are extensions and greasemonkey scripts that will expand these short urls automatically w/o you clicking on them so you know what you’re getting before you get there.
