First things first, you have to decide on which theme to use or maybe you’ll rather want your outsourcee to design one for you. Lexi – updates are so annoying! That’s why we do offer this service here. I just went and did this here on the site this morning AND updated plugins as well. Not to mention hitting up some other blogs. It’s something that most don’t want to even think about.

Colors is such a personal issue for some. Even as designers we can give suggestions, but ultimately it’s the clients word that goes. In the past I’ve had some crazy designs with way too much color. Just because they were fun. But even my personal blogs are now more sedate.

Don’t forget when you are thinking of colors and color schemes that you will be putting graphics and pictures up on the blog. You want the button ads and/or pictures to be the focus and not necessarily the layout and the vibrant colors.

It is sooooooo easy for a non-programmer to make great wordpress themes these days with no experience (takes like 10 minutes) that I think the concept of searching out a free theme with god knows what kind of coding issues might be stuck in the middle is going to fade away this year.

That said those are 3 essential plugins, but if twitter goes down (like during the denial of service attack) be ready to temporarily disconnect twitter tools fast, or it might spin up your hosting servers processor and your host (if they catch it) will kill your site.

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for giving us some great getting started tips. I outsourced my blog setup to Charly Leetham in Australia and have never regretted it for a tiny second. It’s so nice to have “someone else” figure out what the problem(s) is/are when something goes technically wrong! Needless to say, this has saved me a tremendous amount of time, which equates to money. Technically challenged, I am and therefore, outsourcing these tasks makes perfect sense to me!

I started out with knowing I wanted a 3-column blog, but couldn’t find what I wanted in the way of a theme, so Charly modified the theme for me to incorporate the “power” colors that I wanted to use. Now that I have a 3-column blog, I’m not sure I want to keep it that way, but at least I know if I decide to make the change, it will get done in the least amount of time with the least amount of expense, but more importantly, will be done right!

You have an awesome idea hopping around on a blog tour. Hope you don’t mind if I follow you around a bit. Lynn Terry has high praises for you and I’m sure I can learn a thing or two from you along the way!
