Are You a Victim of Analysis Paralysis?

I know I have been many times in the past, and I probably will be some time in the future too. I think it happens to all of us from time to time. The important thing is that we find a way to work past it and get back in the game.
Susanne recently blogged about this over at Affiliate Treasure Chest, and her post really resonated with me. Heck, it was as if she was looking over my shoulder and telling you about my day -lol-
It’s worth a read if you’re like me and you sometimes get stuck completely of your own doing. I’m guilty of pushing myself too hard all at one time, getting totally burnt out on everything, and I definitely overwhelm myself when there’s no need to.
When Susanne talks about getting overwhelmed and having too much on her plate, I totally started nodding my head and thinking, “Oh yeah, I’ve done that to myself more than a million times!” It’s easy to do when you’re working online. Ideas come all the time, you learn new things all the time, there are new things happening and new people coming on the scene all the time. It makes you want to do everything.
One thing that I used to do, and would end up with a really bad case of chronic case of stuckness was to make this huge to do list. Sometimes, I’d even need a second sheet of paper. Ack! Well, I still make that big to do list, but I consider more of a brain dump now, the list of things I want to do.
Then I go back over that list, grab a PostIt note or an index card off my desk and make a short list of the things that need to get done right now. Usually that narrows my list down to about five or six things. I star off the most important three items, and that is my to do list for the day. If those three things get done, I’m being productive and working where I should be. If all six of those items on the short list get done, then woohoo, I’m on a roll!
If I have some time left at the end of the day I might do a few other things from the want to do list, but a lot of times the truth is those extra things don’t really need doing. They were just floating around in my head, cluttering up my list, and making me unproductive and unfocused.
I wish I could take credit for this brilliant to do list making plan, but I really owe it all to Nicole Dean and Kathleen Gage for their to do list tips. They inspired me to get my to do’s in order and I’ve become more productive as a result.
Don’t worry if you get stuck now and then. Just remember to take that deep breath, focus, and get back to work.

Hi Retta,
I believe that all of us who work from home eventually get into that state of paralysis. Making the to-day list is one thing that was putting off. I had huge to-do lists but they weren’t being structured time-wise as to when I needed them done. That’s what you just explained here. Grab the today from the big todo and we’re off to getting things done. It’s all about making decisions and sticking to those decisions.
Thanks for this post. It’s really motivated me to write out a plan at the beginning of each day.
All the best,
Eren
