Do You Jump In Head First?

Over the weekend I was finishing up some transcription and proofreading and getting ready to sign off for the night. Then an idea smacked me in the head like a rock slide. I almost just grabbed the domain name and got started. But, I stopped myself.

Why on earth did I do that? A year ago I probably would have just grabbed the domain name and ran with the idea. But, over the past year my business has grown and my objectives have changed. While this idea has the potential to be hugely profitable, I have a lot on the plate right now and I don’t want to severely neglect it.

Instead of jumping straight into building the site I sat here and wrote two pages front and back of notes. I basically have the entire thing laid out on paper right now and it’s ready for me after I get a few more things finished up online. It’s a huge project in a long line of huge projects on my long term goal list. If I want to do it proper justice I need to be able to focus on it when the time comes.

I’ll keep adding to my notes for the project so that I don’t forget the ideas and the plan, and by time February rolls around I’ll be ready to work on it. But, for right now I’ve got to keep on keeping on at what I’m doing so that I can continue to grow. Unless someone gets that clone machine working and there can be two of me… then maybe I can go ahead.

That’s not to say that jumping in head first is a bad idea! It’s actually a good idea a lot of times. Some of the best websites on the internet started off that way. Heck, this website started that way! We had an idea and we ran with it and now here we are.

So, how about you? Do you jump into everything head first? Do you need a plan before you start? What goes through your mind when you have a new project idea?
