Transcription Crash Course Got a Makeover – What do you think?

A few months ago I launched my first product, Transcription Crash Course, and I did it in sort of a hurry once the idea came to me so I didn’t have a lot of pretty graphics and fancy sales copy. What I did have was some solid information to offer people and I wanted to get it out there as quickly and efficiently as I possibly could. After I finished writing the report itself I had a nice ecover made and I grabbed free template to use for the site design.

There really wasn’t anything wrong with what I had up originally, but I felt it needed a little more personality. I’m hoping this quick little makeover will help to improve conversions on the site. I know looks aren’t everything and as Nicole Dean would tell me, “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be profitable.” And you know what? She’s right It wasn’t perfect, in fact when I first put it up it was very plain, it was a rough draft of a sales page at best and I’ve been adding to it and improving upon it a little bit at a time since the launch.

So, here’s a side by side before and after ….

P.S. If you need help doing a quick makeover like this on one of your pages I’d be glad to help you out. I’m not a designer per say, but I do my best with what I’ve got. Harvest Leaves – Day 4 of 7 Days of Wordpress Themes

Welcome back. I hope that you enjoyed your day with your family yesterday. Today it’s back to business for me, and probably you too. I really wish the boys had 9-11 off of school, I was tempted to keep them home for the day for a family snuggle day, but they all chose to go to school. It turned out okay, they had some group activities in remembrance and special flag ceremonies to attend, so it was still a very good day.

We bring you Harvest Leaves for day 4 of the 7 day wordpress theme run. I love it when the leaves start to turn and fall. Fall colors, smells, and pumpkin pie! Yummy Okay, so there’s no pie in the theme, sorry I gobbled that all up already.

Skull & Crossbones Fun – Day 3 of 7 Days of Wordpress Themes

First my confession, I love how easy it is to find skull and crossbones on shoes and bags these days. I’ve always loved that piratey bad girl feeling. What can I say, I’m young at heart? So, this theme started off with a cute little skull and crossbones, nothing scary here, and a warm color scheme. I love the way the colors in this theme come together.

Purple Playdate – Day 2 of 7 Days of Wordpress Themes

Welcome back! Today we have something a little on the lighthearted side for a mommy blogger or a family article section, it’s not too niche specific so you could use it just about anywhere you wanted. I love purple for blogs, I don’t know why… it just says happy and fun!

This theme is called Purple Playdate and features some fun stick figure kids drawings and light colors that are easy on the eyes. Of course, there’s plenty of purple, and pastek colors, but nothing overpowering. I hope you enjoy this two column free wordpress theme.

Daffodil Day – Day 1 of 7 Days of Wordpress Themes

Hi there everybody! It’s me, Loretta. I know you haven’t heard from me in ages, and I’ve got to apologize for all of that. I’ve been pretty busy with client work and the chaos of life set me back a little bit schedule wise. But, the kids are back to school and I’m back to working full time during the day while they’re gone. If I didn’t work during the day I think I would pass out of boredom.

We’re starting off this seven day extravaganza with Daffodil Day. This theme features a left sidebar, fixed width, bright sunshiney colors and ladybug crawling on a daffodil. I would say this is fitting for a personal blog, a gardening blog, maybe some nature talk ,etc…. Of course your imagination is the limit.

Article Directory Created with WordPress

It’s no secret that we love WordPress as our content management system. There are just so many things that you can create and do with it, not just blogging! In this particular case I created an article directory, Free Craft Articles, using WP to manage the authors and submissions.

I’ve managed quite a few article directories and they all have their ups and downs. I’m actually looking at converting one of my other small directories into this format as well. It’s clean and provides better SEO for the articles than the average free article directory script.

You can add adsense and other monitization methods easily,as well as customize the loko of the site with a large amount of flexibility. If you’re a WordPress user you know how many free themes are floating around out there, you can use any of those or even custom build your own design like I did here.

I started off with a magazine style theme, you might recognize it since it’s actually the same theme base that we have right here on Easy Wahm Websites. Amazing how a few tweaks and changes can take a theme and turn it into something completely new and different.

After the design was done I added a few plugins. Mighty Adsense is definitely recommended here to make it easy to put ads where you want them to go. I put a tag cloud on the side, added some terms of service, a few affiliate links to programs that I highly recommend and ta-da an article directory was born.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t as easy as it sounds, but it was fairly easy. To allow submissions you just change the settings to allow new authors to register, then they simply “write post” and publish …. what’s nice is as contributors their published material doesn’t go live until it’s been approved by an admin, that’s you or your virtual assistant, so you don’t have to worry about spam slipping through the cracks.

Home and Family Ezine Site Makeover

Angela of Home and Family Ezine contacted me this month and asked if I could help her redo her webpage. She showed me a few examples of what she wanted to do to give the page a fresh look. Have a look at the results of the big change below.

First we made it three columns to eliminate the need for a lot of scrolling down the page. We made the content area a little wider (it’s 800 px now) to accommodate the three columns, and rearranged the logo to go straight across. We added a light colored background using the accent color in the logo design, and matched the titles of the individual sections to the main font color in the logo.

Just these few simple changes made a huge difference as you can see here with these full length screenshots. This was a fun project to work on. Angela was great to work with, she communicated her idea to me really well and everything went so smoothly.

Working With BANS Build a Niche Stores

So on this week’s to do list is a lot of work with BANS, or Build a Niche Stores. I’m sure by now you’ve seen these around the internet and a lot of people are picking up the software and opening their own ebay affiliate stores. What’s great about BANS is that you need 0 products. It’s all right there for you. The only thing you need to worry about it adding content to the site and tweaking keywords. That’s it!

Just to show how easy BANS is to use… I let my 11 year old help me set up my most recent shop. He’ll make a good VA some day!

Here’s two shops that we have set up that are all about Wii products. Of course my helper did more window shopping than helping at one point. These aren’t 100% finished yet, but they have a template, a custom header, a few articles and some specialty store pages added to them. It’s a good beginning to the site and we will add to that little by little.

Best Wii Downloads is using a two column template with the sidebar on the right.

Wii Party Accessories is using a three column template so that there is a sidebar on each side.

These shops have had very little work and promotion put into them and they’ve already picked a PageRank of 3 and have gotten a few handfuls of search traffic. Not bad for just getting things set up. And it was easy. I was explaining the steps to my son and he understood exactly what I was doing and where things needed to go. So to all those folks out there that are worried that it’s to technical for them or too hard, put your mind at ease. It truly is as easy to set up as they say it is.
